Namibia Tourism Information: General Information
Natural Features: Mostly high plateau; Namib Desert along coast; Kalahari Desert in east
Rainy Seasons: Oct-Dec and long rainly season are Jan-April
Accommodation: There is a wide choice of accommodation to fit all tastes. This includes luxury hotels, tented camps, self catering facilities and farm accommodation.
Post and Communications: There is a direct telephone dialing facility to 201 countries from Namibia. Telecards for making local calls are available at post offices and teleshops. Airmail to and from Europe takes four days to two weeks.
Shopping:Namibian diamonds and other gemstones can be bought from a variety of jewellery shops in Windhoek. Ostrich leather articles, ostrich eggs and other Nambian crafts also make excellent gifts.
Getting There
Air: Air Namibia, the national carrier, maintains flights to Frankfurt, London, Luanda, Lusaka, Harare, Victoria Falls, Johannesburg and Capetown. Foreign airlines providing a service to Windhoek include South African Airways, British Airways, Air Botswana, Air Zimbabwe and Lufthansa. Hosea Kutako Airport caters primarily for international air traffic while Eros Airport, situatted within the municipal boundaries of Windhoek handles domestic and regional flights.
Rail: The main rail line runs from the South African border via Keetmanshoop to Windhoek, Okanhandja, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. A northern section links u with Omarruru, Otjiwarongo, Otavi, Tsumeb and Grootfontein.
Sea: Namibia has two harbours: Walvis Bay and Luderitz. Walvis Bay is a deep sea harbour with eight berths and a separate tanker berth facility. Luderitz accommodates only small ships.
Travel Around
Air: Namibia has domestic flight schedules to most game reserves. Air charters are also available.
Road: Namibia has a very good road network. Four-wheel drive vehicles are readily available for hire.
Rail: Major tourist attractions are served by train services.
Driving: International Driving Permit required.
Passport and Visa: Require by all. Passport validity: Passports must be valid 6 months from date of entry & departure. Recommended Immunisation: diphtheria, hepititis A, hepatitis B, malaria, meningitis, polio, TB, tenanus, typhoid. Recommended in some circumstances, seek further advice.
Compulsory Vacination: Yellow fever certificate if arriving infected areas.
